GETTING TO AND FROM THE AMAZON CANOE CHALLENGE 2024
ARRIVAL AIRPORT
Your international arrival airport is Lima, Peru.
The closest airport to your departure point is Cusco, Peru. This is approximately a one hour flight from Lime.
It is common for delays and cancellations of domestic flights in Peru, so we advise to never take the last flight that will get you to your destination on time.
Be aware that altitude sickness is common on arriving in Cusco so it is advised to take a few days there to acclimatise before departing on the Challenge.
If you fancy a bit of luxury before starting the Challenge, The Hilton in Santa Ana, Cusco is always highly rated by our teams or check out Booking.com if you are looking for something more budget friendly.
DEPARTURE POINT
You will depart from Cusco, Peru to Pilcopata on the 02 June which is a small jungle town in Manu.
There will be shared shuttles that will collect you from a central location in Cusco. The exact departure point and time will be sent to you closer to the date, although it will be around 8:00 in the morning from a central location in the city.
The journey is approximately 6 hours and we will stop for lunch on the way. Bring water and snacks.
There are options for a private 4WD transfer – Contact us to find out more.
CHALLENGE SCHEDULE
02 June: Depart from Cusco
03 June: Training Day
04 – 09 June: On the River
09 June: Finish Line
10 June: Transfer from Los Amigos to Puerto Maldonado
DEPARTURE
We expect to arrive in Puerto Maldonado at approximately 3pm on the 10th June.
It’s common to experience delays on the return as we travel by local shuttle on the river. We advise not to book any onwards travel on the 10th of June, including the 5.10pm flight from Puerto Maldonado to Lima.
There are domestic flights available to Lima from Puerto Maldonado (approx. 100USD) or cheaper local busses that travel overnight, usually departing around 8pm.
Don’t forget that the environmental impact of travelling by bus is much less than flying.
If you are spending more time in Peru, Puerto Maldonado is a nice place to spend a few days and relax. We usually stay at Wasai Eco Lodge which has a nice pool and bungalow style rooms as well as resident sloths that hang out in the garden.
