Keep in mind that the total weight of your equipment must be under 20kg, not including food & water, and must be carried with you at all times on your canoe.
We are unable to store equipment or carry additional gear.
Avoid cotton clothing if you are planning on being in an environment where you think you might get wet. The Amazon is a humid environment and you might experience heavy rain depending on the season you visit. Or you might just take an unexpected dunk from your canoe. Either way, make sure to bring synthetic light-weight clothing that dries quickly.
Mosquitos and the infamous ‘manta blanca’ are ever present and although our checkpoints are designed to keep you as far away as possible from them, it’s a reality of travel in the Amazon. Covering as much as you can keeps you safe(r) from all things that bite.
Climate change is making weather in the Amazon more unpredictable, with changes to the traditional wet & dry seasons. It’s also becoming more common for cold spells which can reach as low as 10C at night.
Having a separate ‘toilet kit’ works well – Keep all your essentials in an easy access waterproof or ziplock bag.
It’s important to have closed toed shoes that dry quickly. Keep in mind that some waterproof hiking boots are slow to dry and hold water – Wet feet is a cause of ‘Jungle Rot’, a fungal infection caused by having constantly wet feet.
For the 2024 Amazon Canoe Challenge, you will be expected to be self-sufficient for the duration of the Challenge.
In some sections, you may be gifted or have the opportunity to purchased food from our community partners. In other sections, there may be stops where you can find basic supplies such as fruit, vegetables or dried goods. Otherwise, the availability of food will be limited or non existent along the route.
We recommend that your team brings a supply of dehydrated food with you as this is hard to come by once in Peru. Your food supplies will be checked by our team to ensure you are sufficiently prepared.
We provide water that will be carried with you in your canoe, and also offer water stations at designated checkpoints along the route.
We will provide water purification tablets as part of your emergency kit bag for the duration of the Challenge.
Electronics and humidity aren’t a great mix. Keep that in mind if you’re planning on bringing expensive camera gear with you. Keep your gear in dry bags and remember that charging opportunities may be limited.
